Do you hear the People Sing?

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!


Just watched the musical production of Les Miserables yesterday, and it was one of the most SPECTACULAR things I've ever seen! I love Victor Hugo's work, I love Delacroix, and well, the time period, and so I ended up painting this and experimenting with the different brushes and masks.

Basically in 1830 (around the time that Liberty Leading the People was painted if I'm not mistaken—if I make any inaccurate statements its your job to correct me) there was a revolution that forced the Bourbon King Charles X out of office–it isn't as well known as the one that overthrew Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette but I think it's pretty fascinating nonetheless.
