Can't grow up too soon
'Cause you don't know how
My Child, first things come first
Let me open you a door
To a world you've never seen
Let me open your eyes
To a place you've never been

Go on, and touch that star
I am holding on to you
Can't let you go just yet
You don't know what to do
I'll be your guide on this path so new.

Can't grow up too soon
Stay with me for a while
And marvel at the wonder of this world
I've been in it so long
And been so many places
But this universe's song
Is infinitely long
There is still much to learn and hear and see.

Let me tell you child
It's what you need to know
This world is such a vicious, hungry place
So if you don't keep your head
You might wind up dead
There are dragons to be slain
That we must face.

I have been loved, my daughter
And I have loved as well
Both love and loss may linger in a soul
Do not make it a trifle but a treasure
For you, and one who's worthy of your heart.

Can't stay a child forever
Amongst the sea and stars
Without a care to the passing of each day
Postpone as long as you can
Your destiny
But it will be taken up eventually.

Go on and touch that star
I am holding on to you
I don't want to let you go just yet
But this now I will say
There will be a day
When you will fly, my child
On wings of your own making.

Can't stay a child forever
Blissfully unaware
Growing up is hard, yes that I know
But You don't have to do it all alone.

Life is marching quickly;
Wisdom does not mean you must forget
All you've learned since, no
Keep them in your heart
Again this brave new life
This universe's song you too may sing
As you fly and take wing
Take wing,

One day you'll no longer need
This old soul
'Cause you'll be on your own
In a love-filled home
Have a good life, do it for me
Make me proud, like you want me to be
Just letting you know
When that hour comes
I'll be thinking of you
I've told you forever
But I'll say it again
Wherever you go
You'll always be
My little girl.

Go on and touch that star
There's nothing you can't do
Remember what I've taught you
I won't let go just yet
But when I do, don't forget.

This Universe's song
Is infinitely long
There is so much for you to hear and see.
I started this mostly with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond in mind, but it sort of escalated into a more broader context, a parent talking to their child. I was thinking that all the Doctor's companions have been sort of like his children, how he "opens their eyes to a world they've never seen" but they all need to grow up sometime, leave him and go back to their world, sometimes abruptly, sometimes by their own choice, no matter what their age is, since the Doctor is older than all of them anyhow.

But outside of the Doctor Who contest, I think it fits pretty much to any parent/child relationship. We've been talking about Mythology and the Hero and Coming of Age in English class, and it made me think of this a bit. (I purposely decided to leave out refs to the Oedipal complex, but they might have gotten in there subconsciously anyway.)

Wow, I love this!
It's great in the Amy/doctor context, but even better in a general child/parent context!
I think the words themselves are very beautiful and the message it conveys timeless and wise.
