Literature Text

One Day I crossed that wide, uncertain street
That Avenue where past and future meet
And in the centre, strong but weary men
Their years now being past a score and ten
Reflecting on their days of youth now gone
Reminiscing; Old wars last year were won
Of how the days behind them, virginal
Allowed no fault. A shield from Duty's call
Still longing for those fair idyllic years
Allegedly there were no toil or tears
Yet as those weary men look fondly back
Upon their long-lost lives and trodden track
Do any face the forward future road?
To lengthen still that track, and bear its load?
No, they just feed their flawèd memory
Of time long gone, that nev'r again will be.
This poem was written while I was thinking about how many older people talk and think about their past; It's either one of the following: Romanticizing accomplishments and/or hardships they endured, missing their "young" years, conveniently "forgetting" the trials that happened in the past or on the flipside, remembering only the hardships of it. Also, some people seem to think that just because they've had a hard time in their youth, it excuses them from being responsible now. ("... A shield from Duty's call") Mostly it explains itself- how too much retrospective can affect where you're going in the future, in my case, they're just "sitting" in the middle of the street, which is a dangerous place to be, because if you don't move, you could get hit by a car. So being over-nostalgic can hurt you.

And yes, I know that not everyone is like this; it's just an observation of those who do.

Whee! Your poetry for the epic win! I really love the flow of this. :D And nice inspiration; I can never seem to think of anything to write about.
